Discussion Post for ‘Poetry and Politics’

In ‘Poetry and Politics’ one of the poets, Erica Hunt, discusses politics, poetry, and how these two different things connect people. Poetry is a platform that can be used for popularity. A lot of strong messages can be replayed through poetry. In her poem “Surplus Future Imperfect” she writes about how society extreme judgements diminishes individuality.

Something that resonates is the consistent appearance of ‘no’. Often times the word has a negative connotation to it. Lines such as “no reason to get up… no difference…  no music… no seatbelts” (59) shows how hopeless one is and how everyone in society is the same. There is no enjoyment or safety anywhere anymore. Everyone has to be careful of everything. She describes struggles. As a minority myself, I can relate to the ideas presented to the poem. How there isn’t a safe place and society always seems like the bad guy. She writes about her experience and her viewpoint. The platform that is poetry allows readers to relate and visualize what Hunt is feeling.
